Dr. J.A. Schiltkamp
Dr. J.A. Schiltkamp, a distinguished legal professional, was renowned for his expertise in the incorporation of Netherlands Antilles companies and managing their international trading and investment activities. His legal practice was instrumental in the formation and control of Corporate Trust and its affiliated company N.V. Macor, which expanded significantly in the late 1980s and early 1990s to other Caribbean islands such as the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands.
In 1993, Dr. Schiltkamp played a pivotal role in facilitating the merger between Corporate Trust N.V. and Amsterdamsch Trustee's Kantoor B.V., leading to the establishment of ATC in its current form. Although his age prevented him from serving on ATC's Supervisory Board, he continued to contribute as counsel to the board for many years, significantly impacting ATC's development.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Schiltkamp was deeply committed to the community of Curaçao, where he resided since moving from Holland in 1952. He served as Secretary and later as Chairman for the Curaçao Foundation for the Preservation of Historical Buildings from 1956 to 1965. Under his leadership, the foundation focused on preserving the historic nucleus of Willemstad, purchasing, restoring, and renting out old dwellings to the original inhabitants. This initiative transformed the historic inner city into an economic asset and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Dr. Schiltkamp's passion for colonial history and law led him to publish extensively in these areas. He was also involved in establishing the law faculty of the Netherlands Antilles, which later evolved into the University of the Netherlands Antilles with a broader curriculum.
Dr. Schiltkamp will be deeply missed by his family and former colleagues at ATC. His legacy of professional excellence and community service continues to inspire those who knew him.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. J.A. Schiltkamp. He was a pioneering figure in the development of the offshore sector in Curaçao during the 1960s and 1970s, leaving behind a profound impact on the legal and historical landscape of the island.
